Pharmacy First

The Pharmacy First service commenced on 31st January 2024. 98% of pharmacies across mid and south Essex are signed up to provide the service.

Patients will be able to contact their local Pharmacy First pharmacy to arrange a consultation.

Reception staff will signpost patients to this service where appropriate.

What does the service involve?

The new Advanced service involves pharmacists providing advice and NHS-funded treatment, where clinically appropriate, for seven common conditions:

  • sinusitis (12 years and over)
  • sore throat (5 years and over)
  • acute otitis media (1 to 17 years)
  • infected insect bite (1 year and over)
  • impetigo (12 years and over)
  • shingles (18 years and over)
  • uncomplicated urinary tract infections in women (16 to 64 years old)

Consultations for these seven clinical pathways can be provided to patients presenting to the pharmacy as well as those referred by NHS 111, general practices and others.
